StepMania 5

Arguably the best party game ever designed

Let the rhythm flow and let your thighs get sore. Stepmania is one of the most beloved party video games of the last fifteen years.

StepMania may be free, but, much like with every other party game of the sorts, you will need a particular prop to enjoy it as it was meant. StepMania is an open source offshoot game based on the original Dance Dance Revolution. The gameplay consists in stepping in on the four (or eight) foot sized directional buttons in sync with the rolling instructions. The dance mats can be acquired relatively easy either from the official StepMania site or from other sources, which unmistakably show up during an Internet search.

StepMania 5

StepMania is in its fifth incarnation. I don't quite remember what makes it much better than the one I sampled some twelve years ago, but in all honesty, there are so many play modes that you can rarely get bored from even one song. Depending on the meticulousness of the creator, songs may feature several difficulty levels and variants for two players. You can also opt for various play modes, featuring single, several songs in succession, or continuous play, that is until your legs can cope.

The official distribution comes with three songs ready to play, but you can download extra song packs as well as make yourself if you have the time, disposition, and necessary skill to create something playable and fun at the same time. Remember, there's nothing worse than a poorly implemented StepMania song at the party. Or maybe there is, but implementation quality is not guaranteed since we're not talking about official and sanctioned content most of the time.

StepMania 5

StepMania has a ton of configuration options under its hood. Even if the game principle is simple, the program is designed to be usable even as a paid arcade game. Of course, having a couple of pads, a sizable TV set, and a supply of your choice of drink can make the best out of the night.

Final Thoughts

Nothing is stopping you from trying out StepMania on your keyboard. However, once you've decided on buying a pad, I recommend you practice for a weekend before trying to impress your friends at the next sleepover party. The game is as good as you make it.
